Miscarriage
When a woman conceives, the embryo in her womb takes half of its genes from the sperm and half from the egg. This crossover of genes takes place at the very juncture of conception. Sometimes, during this crossover, some information gets lost due to sheer chance factor. The pregnancy continues normally as long as the information is not required and then, due to the lapse of information the baby dies. This is when the miscarriage takes place. If the baby fails to implant itself in the womb lining, then also such an accident can happen.
The misconceptions
Miscarriage does not take place for drinking alcohol or eating unpasteurised cheese. Lack of intake of folic acid or lack of rest can also never lead to the same. Occurrence of miscarriage for having sex is also a profound misconception.
Some major queries answered
When a miscarriage takes place, the bleeding generally continues for 7/10 days, gradually reducing towards the end. The flow is not heavier than that during menstruation and is not accompanied by any offensive odor. Sometimes, however it takes a little time to happen and is referred to as the “missed miscarriage”.
After a miscarriage, there is a gap of about six weeks before the starting of the next period and the fertility returns before it. In very exceptional cases an infection of the womb lining may lead to consistent blood loss and offensive odor. A short course of antibiotic or a D&C (dilatation and curettage) can cure the problem. Contrary to the misconception, a D&C does not enhance the possibility of miscarriage in subsequent pregnancies.
The risk of miscarriage decreases with the progress in pregnancy and it notably reduces after the 8th week. Recurrent miscarriage should always be reported to the doctor.
A maternal age of 40+, ill controlled diabetes or a smoking habit can aggravate the risk of miscarriage.
